Scherzi a parte, perché You Tube?

Sabrina: La domanda è d’obbligo, Betta.

“The best ideas don’t come from reason,
but from a lucid, visionary folly”
(E. Rotterdam)

Every time I think about Rome, my beautiful city – despite all of its issues and its flaws – I repeatedly ask myself why would anyone ever want to live anywhere else.

Rome, a short word which contains so much charm: its mild climate all year round, beauty found at every corner, its art and its history, its castles (and I’m not talking about where the princes and princesses live..The lucky ones who were able to visit, know what I’m talking about. For those who don’t know, I will unveil the secret soon, I promise its lakes, its beaches and last but certainly not least, its location. In fact, it is strategically situated in a way that, if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city, its beautiful countryside is just a short ride away.
Rome is Rome. Enough said.

Yet, I hear that more and more Romans live abroad, which for me, as a Roman living in America, is somewhat reassuring.
So, when Sabrina told me about one of her favorite YouTubers (Betta Bella, aka Elisabetta Donato) moved from Rome to Berlin, I instantly thought how interesting it would be to interview her.

Betta (that’s what we call her) is a really nice person, very down to earth and she kindly accepted our request to ask her a few questions right away.

In her YouTube channel she talks about makeup, beauty and all of those cute little things us ladies are crazy about and love so much.

What do you say guys? Would you like to get to know her better? I brought Sabrina along with me as she really wanted to meet her too.

Sabrina: Ciao Betta, let me ask you right off the bat, are you a Roman in Germany too?
I know this could probably take forever, but would you like to tell us what, according to you, are the differences and similarities between Rome and Berlin?

That is correct. A Roman in Germany is definitely more accurate that an Italian in Germany. Rome is my city and my heart. I’ve always been very attached and always had a very deep love for it, even though I left.
Rome and Berlin are very different from one another. Rome’s scent is the best. I have never been able to find it anyplace else in the world.
Berlin is a very unique city as well. Every corner tells a story and reminds us all about  the pain and suffering the Nation went through in the past.
I will say this, what Rome and Berlin have in common is their uniqueness. They are both very different from each other and definitely one of a kind.

Alessandra: what do you love and what do you dislike about both cities?

If I have to think about something I dislike about Rome, the first thing that comes to mind is definitely our traffic! It’s crazy how long it takes to go from one side of the city to the other. What I love, let me think, there are so many things, maybe too many.. It’s just magical…
As far as Berlin goes, I was stunned about how everything works perfectly here. Unlike in Rome, buses arrive on time and there are no long lines at the post office. What I don’t like is the strict German mentality, which I had a hard time adjusting to.

Alessandra: we know you love your makeup. Were you always passionate about it or is it something you discovered growing up?

Let’s say that I started approaching makeup when I was in middle school. My very first pieces I purchased were a pen eyeliner, a foundation stick (no idea what I wanted to cover up when I was 12) and a vanilla lip gloss!

Sabrina: I’m going to ask you the Roman way now: what were you thinking?? (Roman pronounce and everything). Just kidding.
Why YouTube? When and why did you decide you were going to make videos? Which by the way, we as bloggers absolutely love and enjoy!

I started following Clio. I admired her courage to film herself and her braveness to post her videos online and publicly. Something impossible for me to do when I first set foot into this world.
Slowly but surely I embraced the idea and opened my own channel in 2010. I started making videos without showing my face at first. I just wanted to get out there and share something about me even if I didn’t know who was watching on the other side of the screen.
In 2012 everything changed. I realized I didn’t enjoy what I was doing because it didn’t really reflect who I was. I am a firm believer of chemistry between people. I like to see how they speak, move their hands, look into people’s eyes. Body language is important to me. My channel lacked personality and I wasn’t pleased with it. At the same time I was going through a rough patch, in a matter of a few months I lost one of the most important people in my life and my only escape was making videos back then. I don’t know, talking about superficial and unimportant stuff helped me cope with the nightmare I had to deal with in real life. That’s when I pushed myself and kept going. I never stopped and still going strong.
YouTube is a great tool to learn about new people and new things.

Alessandra: do you have any role models? Does anyone inspire you or is there a particular YouTuber you especially admire?

Not really. I just admire all of those who don’t take YouTube too seriously. There are many ” colleagues ” out there competing with one another to get more subscribers, views and collaborations with as many companies as they can.
To many, YouTube is an obsession and it’s unhealthy. I think it should be used for what it is. I am happy to say that because of YouTube I found many good friends I can talk to and share my passions with.

Sabrina: we have to ask you this, Betta: which are the best low cost products to use for the perfect, subtle daytime makeup?

The perfect daytime makeup has to deliver great results in very little time, if you ask me.
Lately I have been using:
-Fit Me Concealer by Maybelline
-Long lasting eye pencil ( #2 ) by Essence
-Lash Sensational mascara by Maybelline
-Makeup Revolution I Want Candy blush in Flushing
-Lip tint in Sangria ( #8 ) by Wjcon, is one of my favorites.

Alessandra: last big question: are you in Germany to stay?

I have been driving myself crazy over this for a while. There’s a part of me that would love to go back to Italy. I mean, it’s home, it’s my country, it’s my world.
It’s not going to be easy though. Unemployment is a huge issue these days and there’s no future for any of us right now. It is what it is, unfortunately.
I’m happy in Berlin. I love this city, my job and all of my new friends I am growing really close with.
Never say never though. So, we shall see.

Alessandra and Sabrina: thanks Betta. It was very nice talking to you. Good luck with everything.
