“Fuoco brucia, bolli paiolo..
Occhio di tritone, dito di rana,
Pelo di nottola, lingua di cane,
Forca di vipera e punta d’orbetto,
Zampa di ramarro, ala di gufetto,
Per una fattura che faccia male,
Bolli e ribolli brodo infernale”
(W. Shakespeare)

” Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder’s fork, and blind-worm’s sting,
Lizard’s leg, and owlet’s wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.”
( William Shakespeare )

I am taking up the challenge to invite you all to the States and show you how Americans are getting ready to celebrate the spookiest holiday of the year and, as always, I need a special helper to assist me in getting the job done. Caterina, one of my collaborators, lives in Maine, and, just a few days ago, she visited Salem, home to haunting mysteries that have been inspiring authors and film directors all over the world for decades. I asked her if she could tell us more about her trip to the Witch City and this is what she had to say.

” To me October represents the beginning of the most wonderful time of the year. From here on out, all the way to January, I’m just in constant hyper and electrified mode, like a kid in a candy store. Everything around me is brighter and colorful and my joy for life, which runs pretty high as it is, doubles in intensity making my heart pop out of my chest for just staring at the sky, walking on crunchy red and yellow leaves and looking at Autumn decorations from porches, grocery stores and pretty much everywhere else in the US.

The reason why I get so excited about the arrival of October is because during this month we celebrate Halloween, my sister’s favorite holiday since she was a little girl, therefore, the festive atmosphere evokes some of my fondest childhood memories that, every year around this time, feel like I’m waking up from a long period of hibernation. When I was asked to write an article about Halloween I gladly accepted because I’m the biggest dreamer the world has ever seen and, pausing reality to dive into a bath of emotions and magical memories, sometimes, brings me back to life. This festivity, at the same time, never fails to give me chills because of its disturbing historical background that, still to this day, upsets me dearly, so, since I just moved to New England, I couldn’t think of a better reason to visit Salem, a city near Boston, in Massachusetts and experience more about the American Folklore, through my own eyes.

Upon my arrival I learn that the entire month of October, Haunted Happenings take over Salem to celebrate Halloween and, as I take a quick look around me, I realize that the city offers two different versions of the creepy festivity: one for children, with the legend of drunk Jack the Smith and his pact with the devil, where the notorious Jack ‘O Lantern gets its name from, and one for adults, with the infamous, most brutal witchcraft trial registered in American history that sums up as follows:

During the harsh winter between 1691 and 1692, two young girls, Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Parris, respectively the daughter and the niece of Salem’s reverend, started acting like animals, as if they were possessed by the devil. Shortly after, several other girls showed the exact same symptoms, and, since none of the doctors of the village could figure out a proper diagnosis to treat the young patients, a curse seemed to be the only logical answer causing the start of senseless witchcraft accusations spreading  an outbreak of panic and hysteria which led to a massive witch hunt that quickly spun out of control. Because a curse was classified as a crime and not as an illness, the case needed to be brought before local magistrates. That’s how the Salem Witch trials began.
About 200 people were suspected of evil deeds. In the summer of 1692, 150 people got accused of practicing witchcraft, 54 of them, were forced to confess to be witches under torture and 19 of them were executed, while the rest was imprisoned for false statements.
There are several museum that preserve the history of Salem’s drama and dark times with authentic transcripts and live reenactments of the 1692 witch trials. One of the most popular ones is the Salem Witch Museum, which brings millions of visitors from all over the world, year round.

The only authentic structure that has direct ties with the witch trials is the Witch House, home of Jonathan Corwin, one of the judges of the trials. Today the Witch House is a small museum, one of the most sought after ones where to experience the daily life, customs and architecture of the XVII century.

I would have loved to visit both the Witch Museum and the Witch House, but the lines were crazy long and I was in town only for a day so, as my first time, I just wanted to gain a basic knowledge on how Salem celebrates Halloween – which originated in the Celtic fringes of Britain and became a patriotic holiday in America right after the end of World War 2 – and perhaps come back next time trying to focus on specific attractions to understand more about an entire population’s reasonings for firmly believing that selling one’s soul to Satan was actually a possible reality.  As I keep walking down the street following the red line marked along the sidewalk that will take me downtown, I realize how Salem is still attached to the roots of a terrible past that still haunts the community and makes everything around me sad and gloomy but also singular and charming, like the local police cars that display a logo of a witch on a flying broomstick.

A quick stop to photograph the statue honoring Samantha Stephens ( Elizabeth Montgomery ) in Bewitched, a popular tv show from the 60s and the time has come; I have to take a deep breath and jump into the craziness to experience the spectral, euphoric mood that floats all along Essex Street, in the heart of Salem.

As soon as I get there I get violently wrapped by the chaos of the crowd, as expected. There are endless lines in front of tens of esoteric shops, tents of psychics screaming at the top of their lungs promising perfect and detailed hand and tarot cards readings, witches that swear up and down to be able to cast spells that will bring back long lost loves, change destinies and heal the heart from wounds and scars and so on. It’s becoming very overwhelming trying to walk through an army of people who push me left and right and it’s getting harder to breathe. I must admit the dark gothic / macabre around me is a style I’m not really used to, but there’s a positive energy in the air and it’s so contagious that leaves no room for negative feelings. Everything is painted in black and orange, the vibes are disturbing and dreary yet pleasant and enjoyable. There are witches, black cats, zombies, toothless pumpkins, bats, ghosts, vampires, mummies, skulls and spider webs everywhere. Almost everyone is dressed up in costumes. Some are really cute and entertain the crowd, patiently posing for tourists to take the perfect shot.

*brivido*

Some are real masterpieces that leave you speechless, not only for the outstanding attention to detail, but for the glacial eyes of who’s behind the costumes. There have been a couple of occasions in which my eyes crossed path with theirs, and, while I attempted a smile, they kept gazing into space, as if I didn’t exist. That was definitely my very first encounter with the living dead. *shivers*
