Manca davvero pochissimo alla notte più terrificante dell’anno, Halloween, e ho pensato che sarebbe stato interessante vedere come si preparano le diverse città degli Stati Uniti. Purtoppo questa idea mi è venuta troppo tardi, quindi per questa volta esploreremo solo quelle vicine (a me) e chissà che invece il prossimo anno non riesca a organizzarmi prima ad “andare” un po’ più lontano. Oggi visiteremo Boston, capitale del Massachussets.
Set di moltissimi film, tra cui anche di genere horror, Boston è sicuramente uno dei posti in cui mi piacerebbe essere in questo periodo dell’anno. Premetto che non sono mai stata in questa splendida città ma Daniela Pasqualini, un’altra romana in America proprio come me, ci vive già da diverso tempo, e ho chiesto a lei se avesse avuto voglia di raccontarci che aria si respira da quelle parti. Lei è stata onesta con me e mi ha detto di aver fatto studi Economici per non dover ritrovarsi a scrivere un giorno. Non ho potuto insistere: è come se mio figlio mi chiedesse di aiutarlo con i compiti di Matematica! Così Daniela l’ha scampata, le ho detto che avrei scritto io in cambio di un’intervista per il mio blog a Novembre. Lei ha accettato e sono molto contenta perché così la conoscerete anche voi. Tuttavia per rendermi il lavoro un po’ meno difficile, la mia amica romana a Boston mi ha mandato tante sue foto meravigliose, che sono tutte quelle che poi vedete qui in questo articolo. Dunque, non sapendo cosa mi aspetta (vi ho già detto che non conosco Boston, ricordate?) proverò a raccontarvi la città con gli occhi di chi la guarda per la prima volta, di chi esattamente ci capita per sbaglio e non sa dove guardare e ci si perde con la bocca aperta e gli occhi sgranati. Soprattutto ad Halloween quando nello sguardo si trova nient’altro che lo stupore.
Eppure Daniela, che sostiene di non saper scrivere, mi ha raccontato delle cose davvero interessanti. Ad esempio notando le fantasiose decorazioni, lei mi diceva di come in alcune cittadine vengano organizzate delle competizioni proprio relative alle decorazioni di Halloween. Anzi, a questo proposito, mi rivelava che lei deve limitarsi con le decorazioni perché le sue piccoline sono spaventate, mentre i vicini hanno addirittura la rappresentazione di un cimitero in giardino e teste di zombie penzolanti!
Nella mia visita virtuale della città, Daniela mi ha detto che non posso proprio perdermi le decorazioni nel quartiere esclusivo di Beacon Hill. Andiamo!
Come credo in tutti gli STati Uniti, già da un po’ nei negozi si trovano gadget, costumi e decorazioni legati a questa festa, anzi alcuni punti vendita aprono esclusivamente per Halloween. Pare che gli Americani spendano intorno ai due milioni e mezzo di dollari all’anno tra decorazioni, feste e costumi di Halloween. Le maschere piu’ gettonate di ques’anno sono Superhero, Harley Quinn (avversario femminile di Batman), Batman e Star Wars.
A Boston, Halloween viene festeggiato per tutto il mese di Ottobre con mostre a tema, sfilate, eventi teatrali, maratone in maschera, pub crawls, zucche intagliate, feste private e l’immancabile ” dolcetto o scherzetto”.
Vengono organizzati Ghosts and Gravestones tours per conoscere dettagli, leggende, superstizioni che oscurano la citta’ di Boston e per visitare case stregate che, con il giusto mix di musiche e tecnologie 3D si trasformano in vere e proprie case del terrore. Si visitano inoltre antichi cimiteri tra cui il Granary Burying Ground, dove sono sepolti eroi della rivoluzione americana tra cui Paul Revere, Samuel Adams e 5 vittime del Boston Massacre.
La notte di Halloween a Boston Waterfront vengono organizzate delle cruise Halloween party in maschera (di cui una dal nome Titanic… non molto promettente) di circa 3 ore per ammirare lo skyline di Boston, Haunted Ghost Ship e Haunted Whale Ship per l’avvistamento di balene.
Faneuil Hall, l’area commerciale di Boston, ospiterà l’Halloween Pet parade con giudici che decideranno l’animale vincitore con la miglior maschera.
La Library di Chelmsford, la cittadina in cui vive Daniela, a circa 35 km da Boston, organizza la Spooky Story Competition, una competizione, aperta a tutte le eta’. Vince chi racconta la storia piu’ spaventosa. I piu’ piccolini sono invitati all’ Halloween Storytime, storie e canzoncine seguite da una parade in maschera e da snacks… qui gli snacks non mancano mai!
Mentre a Boston alcune rappresentazioni storiche e sfilate di Halloween potrebbero non essere sempre adatte ai piu’ piccolini sia per gli orari che per le vivide immagini, a Chelmsford, la parade e’ garantita da un “filtro famiglia” pur essendo sempre circondati da zombie, mostri, streghette, fantasmi, scheletri e vampiri.
Per il trick or treat ci sono orari prestabiliti da ogni comune. Solitamente dalle 6:00 alle 8:00 di sera. Daniela mi raccontava che lo scorso anno aveva preparato dozzine di sacchettini contenenti “healthy” snacks, come lollipops alla vitamina C, gommine alla frutta, caramelle a base di yogurt e salatini organici. Suo marito ha già predetto che quest’anno non andrà nessuno a trovarli!
Ora torno a casa per gli ultimi preparativi. Grazie Daniela per questo tour, magari un giorno verrò a trovarti di persona. Chissà, forse il prossimo Halloween!

Only few days left to Halloween, the most terrifying time of the year and I thought that it would be nice to know how some American cities are getting ready for this night. Unfortunately the idea came to my mind a little too late and for this year we we’ll get to know only the towns which are closer to me. Maybe next year I will try to play ahead of time and reach other cities, as well. Today we will go to Boston, the capital of Massachusetts.
Set of many movies and horror movies as well, Boston is for sure one of the places I’d like to be in this part of the year. Let me say first that I never visited this wonderful city but Daniela Pasqualini, another Roman in America like me, has been living there and I asked her to tell us more about it. She honestly admitted that she picked Economics at the university because she had no intention to have to do with literary stuff…I could not insist any longer, it’s like asking me to help my son with math assignments! So Daniela won and I assured her that I would have written the post, but I asked for an interview on the blog in November, in return! She accepted and I am happy so you will come to know her, too. Anyway, to make things easier for me, my Boston friend sent me a lot of amazing pictures, that you can see here. So, I don’t know exactly where this will lead me, (did I already told you that I have no clue about Boston, didn’t I?), but I will try to tell you a little more about this city, through the eyes of someone who sees it for the first time and stands staring and speechless, especially if this happens during Halloween time.
Daniela told me some interesting facts, reiterating that she is not good in writing. Looking at the amazing decorations, she told me that in some towns they also organize competitions for the best Halloween decorations. She also told me that she cannot decorate as much as she’d like to because her daughters would be getting too scared, but her neighbors do. For example, they put up a fake cemetery in the yard and hanging zombie heads, as well!
In my virtual city sightseeing, Daniela told me that I cannot miss Beacon Hill’s decorations. Let’s go!
As in all the U.S. you can find shops selling all kinds of Halloween gadgets, costumes and decorations and some of them are open only during this time of the year. Apparently in the U.S. people spend approximately 2.5 milion dollars a year in Halloween decorations, parties and costumes. The most wanted Halloween costumes this year are going to be: Superhero, Harley Quinn (Batman’s female enemy), Batman and Star Wars.
In Boston, Halloween is being celebrated the whole month of October, with exhibitions, parades, theatre events, masked running marathons, pub crawls, carved pumpkins, private parties and the evergreen “trick or treat”.
Ghosts & Gravestones tours are organized in order to know more about Boston legends and superstitions. Witched houses tour are being organized as well, eventually turning themselves in real haunted houses, thanks to a perfect mix of music and technology. You can also visit some old cemeteries, like the Granary Burying Ground, where are buried American Revolution heroes, like Paul Revere and Samuel Adams and the five victims of the Boston Massacre.
On the Halloween night they also organize some Halloween cruises with masked parties (one of them is called “Titanic”, not such a promising name…) and they last 3 hours, in order to admire Boston’s skyline. There is also a Haunted Ghost Ship and a Haunted Whale Ship, in order to see whales.
Faneuil Hall, the commercial area, will be the venue of the Halloween Pet Parade where judges will choose the best masked pet.
Chelmsford’s library, the town where Daniela lives and it is approx. 35 km away from Boston, organizes the Spooky Story Competition. This competition is open to everybody and the winner is the one who tells the scariest story. Children are invited to the Halloween Storytime, with tales and songs followed by a masked parade and of course, a lot of snacks!
While in Boston some events and parades may not be children-friendly, due to the costumes and the times they are held; in Chelmsford, instead, all activities are family-friendly, but still with zombies, monsters, witches, ghosts, skeletons and vampires.
For the “trick or treat” there is schedule established by each town. Usually it goes from 06.00 to 08.00 p.m. Daniela also told me that last year she prepared dozens of treat bags with healthy snacks, like vitamin C lollipops, fruit and yoghurt candies and organic salted snacks. Her husband predicts that this year nobody will knock on their door!
Now let’s go back home to prepare the last things. Thank you Daniela for the tour, maybe one day I will come to visit you in person. Who knows, maybe next Halloween!
