– E’ facile, vediamo.. Rifletti, ammicchi,

Non so.

– It’s easy. Let’s see. You think.
You wink. You do a double blink.
You close your eyes and jump!
– Bert, what utter nonsense! Ohh!
Why do you always complicate things
that are really quite simple? One, two..
(Mary Poppins )

Today I’m going to go straight to the point: whoever comes to Munich at the right time must visit Tollwood. No ifs, no maybes, no excuses, no alibis. There’s only one thing to do: mark this destination on your map or ( and this I strongly suggest ) save this article to use when the time comes. I’m totally biased, I know, but I disgustingly suggest you opt for the second option. This is not the point though, the point is Tollwood, therefore, I’m going to explain what it is.

Tollwood is a company that organizes a cultural festival in Munich twice a year. The summer version called ” Tollwood Sommerfestival ” takes place at the Olympiapark Süd between June and July while the winter version, called ” Tollwood Winterfestival “, that starts at the Theresienwiese, the same place where the Oktoberfest is held, between the end of November to Christmas.
In this article I’m going to tell you all about the visit I paid to the Winterfestival, just a few days ago which I’m still thinking about its magical atmosphere today. This market is made of huge tents decorated with bright, colorful lights. Each tent hosts a different event creating a calendar of absolute bliss for the whole duration of the festival.

In between tents ( they look like a smaller version of a circus tent, if you will ) there are cute wooden houses that look like the typical ones all respectable Christmas markets offer, but with a twist. I couldn’t miss it for the world, for different reasons, especially for the lights. As soon as I got there I  felt overwhelmed by a multitude of colors so intense it took me a moment to absorb everything in. I just quietly observed everything around me and those who know me must believe how beautiful it was as I’m unable to stay quiet for longer than 5 minutes. Anyway, apart from my flaws, there I am, surrounded by the magical lights.

And by the music coming from the sky, maybe? Or maybe it was just people talking, laughing and shouting, which I perceived as music for my ears and not as noise. I don’t know, sometimes I find myself enchanted by happiness, when I see it in people’s eyes, every time they walk by looking and smiling at me without a reason. Music. That’s exactly what it is to me.

Overall it’s the atmosphere that makes me happy, a feeling that brings me back to a familiar place made of weird ( as some without much of an imagination would say ) people, like myself. Yes, because Tollwood is the celebration of culture and art in all its shapes and forms. In the illuminated tents I was telling you about earlier, many concerts of both classical and light music are held, theatrical plays, dance and acrobatic performances, contemporary and modern art expositions full of stunning sculptures and paintings, while in the open areas my beloved street artists are wandering in between stands. They are sparkly and gorgeous, just like Christmas in New York City.

Of course there are plenty of food courts where you can eat and drink, the little wooden houses sell Christmas souvenirs and whatnot and other tents host craft bazaars and a huge market.

All that is environmentally and eco friendly. Unlike in most traditional Christmas markets, there are a lot of ethnic items in Tollwood as well as natural products, art made with recycled materials, a Christmas tree made of plastic bottles, sculptures made of cans, wood cloth and styrofoam here and there. Every single thing found at the Winterfestival is related to the environment, in fact, conferences and debates about this topic are occasionally taking place here.

Every year the number of visitors increases drastically even though it’s not really considered a tourist destination. It’s more like a different planet, a place that you have the feeling you’re “entering” just like Mary Poppins, with Bert and the children jump into the chalk drawing and end up in a different world. Do you know what I’m talking about? I’m sure you do. This is my way to make myself understood, I was never able to find an answer to why I express myself like this, but that’s what I do. The first thing I said when I first stepped foot in Tollwood was ” People coming here on vacation do visit Tollwood, right? Right? ” Do you guys promise you’ll visit too, if you happen to be in the neighborhood? Will you let this article win you over to where you won’t worry about anything else but come here and just jump like Mary Poppins and I did without thinking twice?

In the meantime I think I decided to do something, even though I don’t like to make plans ahead of time: on New Year’s Eve, here at Tollwood, there will be a big celebration to say goodbye to the year 2015. The open market, the one with the wooden houses, will close on December 24th although the food court will be open, but the huge tents will host an unbelievable party: we can dance to different types of music ( including my beloved swing, jazz and famous DJs will be here too ) and, around 8pm, one of the tents will host a theatrical play and a midnight waltz right after that.

I think that saying goodbye to this year is the best way for me to celebrate, and the way it suits me perfectly. I’m eager to see a theatrical play I won’t understand too many words of, but I will indeed understand everything else, I want to listen to swing music that will remind me of my dream to visit New Orleans one day, I want to dance the Midnight Waltz with a gentle, old fashioned, random old man, I want to drink several glasses of wine and prosecco – I’m hoping prosecco will be available – and toast with my Christian, I want to listen to the DJs and eat out under the Munich sky, which is not grey at all, as many would assume.

I want to jump into the chalk drawing, again.

And if any of you are thinking about joining me, I will be there. Who knows, maybe together we can jump further.

Sabrina

Oh, I almost forgot. Please visit the Winterfestival in Tollwood if you get the chance. Not because I say so, but because missing it would be a huge mistake.
