(Amerigo Vespucci)

“Those new regions which we found and explored with the fleet we may rightly call a New World, a continent more densely peopled and abounding in animals than our Europe or Asia or Africa”
(Amerigo Vespucci)

Forse. Nella mia logica.

During one of our usual talks where we determine pretty much which articles we’re going to offer for the following months, Sabrina and I discussed focusing solely on America for the whole month of November ( not including her column, obviously ) considering Thanksgiving is approaching. That’s when Sabrina had a great and ambitious idea. She told me, I quote her: ” Ale, why don’t you write about the states in America? You know, people often get confused and forget city names and geographical locations… ” That’s so true. In all honesty I get confused too but I found it to be a brilliant idea which I welcomed with enthusiasm. Then I thought to myself: who am I to even consider teaching all about the states in the U.S. when I only visited 4 of them? What is 4 compared to 50?? So, I took the matter into my own hands and started reading here and there, just to have an idea on what I was getting myself into. But, because I’m hopelessly lazy, I decided to use Facebook as a more efficient resource and asked my American and expat friends who live in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and so on, to help me with this task and, I ended up bringing home a total of 10 states. I got tons of info from them and learned a few things too. I received a lot of amazing pictures that I’m going to share here for you to see. I was pleasantly surprised about the positive feedback I received from my friends. They told me they had fun playing this game along with me which gave me an idea: I’m going to be the director for this and the upcoming articles and they will be my actors. Now, let’s proceed in an orderly fashion ( I hope ) and start from the North East, as if we were in school. I think. According to me, anyway.

Maine is the first U.S. State to see the sunrise every morning. When I asked my friends what came to mind when thinking about Maine they said: lobster, the Acadia National Park, lighthouses ( I have been told the one in the picture is the most photographed lighthouse in the country ), lakes – therefore fishing – and hunting too. Billboards are prohibited in Maine. Blueberry pie is Maine’s official dessert and last but not least Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She wrote lived in the fictional town of Cabot Cove, in Maine.

My friends also told me that Vermont is the largest producer of maple syrup in the United States. Just in Maine, no billboards are allowed in Vermont. I heard the apple pie is the official state pie and that it’s delicious too. Vermont’s dairy farms produce the most milk in all of New England. Famous US ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s is also based in Vermont.

The first basketball game was played in 1891 at what is now Springfield College in Massachusetts. My friends told me that Massachusetts is famous for the witches of Salem, a city we “visited” right before Halloween. If you missed the article make sure you check it out on my blog. Massachusetts is also notorious for the Mayflower Pilgrims who landed at Plymouth Rock. ( I don’t need to tell you that the Plymouth Colony started the evolution of democracy in the United States and that the same Pilgrims feasted with the Native American in the first Thanksgiving celebration, do I? ). I also found out that the Boston cream pie is to die for and a must try if you get the chance to visit the state. Lastly, apparently everyone has a weird, funny accent in Massachusetts, but my lips are sealed: I won’t reveal the source I heard that from.

Rocky Hill is home to a State Park entirely dedicated to dinosaurs. Its well preserved trackways counting hundreds of fossilized dinosaurs footprints, left over 180 million years ago, are considered one of the largest ones in North America and in the world. William Gillette’s castle is also in Connecticut. The popular actor is most famous for pioneering the role of Sherlock Holmes on stage. His castle, in fact, called the Seventh Sister, is often referred to as the Sherlock Holmes Castle. Connecticut is also packed with ghosts and haunted places. It makes sense, castles and ghosts always go good together. Don’t you think?

A Cooperstown poi c’è il Baseball Hall of Fame. New York ne ha davvero per tutti i gusti!

Then again, the NY cheesecake, the art museums, cellars and basements, sightseeing tours and excursions in both the City and throughout the State. There are also Farm Sanctuaries for abused, neglected and abandoned animals, in New York. Fall Foliage in New York is one of the most breathtaking ones in the world. Pennsylvania – Philadelphia – Daniela Pasqualini

These are some of the things that characterize this state that I’ve learned from my friends: farmhouses, Quakers, Gettysburg, Philadelphia ( the Liberty Bell and the famous Rocky Steps, from the movie ). Beautiful Spas, the worst sports fans in the country ( is it true, though? ), The Amish and the Hershey Chocolate Factory. I love the fact that I live close to Pennsylvania ( relatively close, considering it’s a big state ).

The world’s first FM radio tower, the lithium battery, the first postcard, the submarine, the ice cream cone, the first drive – in movie theater and the blueberry sauce are some of the inventions made in New Jersey New Jersey was also the movie capital of the world before Hollywood. I asked my friends what they knew about New Jersey and they refreshed my memory with Einstein, Princeton, the Jersey Shore ( I mean the coastal region of the state, while you guys probably think of the MTV show, be honest ), Bruce Springsteen ( and Bon Jovi ), diners ( New Jersey is considered the diners capital of the world ) which I might write an article about one day. I proceed with Jersey Fresh, Jersey Corn, tomatoes ( it’s not a coincidence it’s called the Garden State ). Atlantic City with it’s gorgeous boardwalk and lots of casinos is a major attraction in New Jersey too. Last, but certainly not least, New Jersey is close to New York City, which is definitely a plus!

Delaware became the first State because it was the first former colony to approve of the new Constitution. Delaware is one of the states that are free of sales tax. The DuPont mansions from the DuPond family are in one of the most exclusive regions in Delaware and also the Pumpkin Chunkin, an annual pumpkin throwing contest is hosted in this state
