Saltuariamente mi piace girare per Roma come turista, vederla non distrattamente dai finestrini della macchina mentre mi sposto per lavoro, ma scegliere una delle sue tante attrazioni e visitarla come farebbe un turista. Qualche settimana fa mi sono preso un giorno di libertà dal lavoro ed ho deciso di ritornare dopo qualche anno ai Musei Vaticani, soprattutto per rivedere la Cappella Sistina. Ho la fortuna di essere amico di una delle guide ufficiali di Roma, Alessandra Marini, e lei gentilmente ha accettato di accompagnarmi.
Arrivo all’appuntamento con Alessandra a piedi in modo da calarmi subito nella parte del turista ed in effetti mentre ci avviamo verso l’entrata dei musei costeggiando il grande muro che definisce il confine della Città del Vaticano, Alessandra inizia il suo racconto e la magia mi trasforma da Massimo di Roma a Maximilian di Copenaghen, mi sembra di essere in una città sconosciuta e comincio a guardare tutto con occhi nuovi. Non vi tedierò descrivendo minuziosamente le varie opere ma farò parlare più le foto sperando che riescano a farvi vivere le emozioni che ho vissuto io in quel momento.
Iniziamo…
Appena varcato l’ingresso si inizia subito con una meraviglia, la scala elicoidale, ha una particolarità che è una doppia spirale dove da una parte si sale e dall’altra si scende.
Occasionally I enjoy wandering around Rome as a tourist and I don’t mean lurking distractedly from my car window while I’m working, but picking one of the many attractions and explore the Eternal City just like the most determined world traveler would do. A few weeks ago I took a day off from work and decided to go back, as I haven’t done it in years, to the Vatican Museums, especially to see the Sistine Chapel. I’m lucky to be friends with one of the official Roman tour guides, Alessandra Marini, who decided to join me for the day. I walked to my appointment with Alessandra, because I wanted to feel the tourist vibes from the get go. As we were heading toward the museums, walking along the giant wall around Vatican City, Alessandra started talking and I magically went from Massimo from Rome to Maximilian of Copenhagen. I felt like I was visiting Rome for the first time and suddenly, everything looked brand new. I will not bore you with too many details of the things I’ve done that day, but I will let my pictures speak for me instead, hoping that, somehow, they will make you feel what I felt the whole time I was there. Ready? Let’s go! Right near the entrance to the Museums we saw the magnificent Spiral Staircase (Scala Elicoidale). What’s interesting about it is that it’s made up of two spiral stairways, one going up and one going down.
Prima di entrare nei musei, facciamo un passaggio in giardino dove ci sono le raffigurazioni di tutti i dipinti nella Cappella Sistina, Alessandra mi li spiega dettagliamente., mi dà altre informazioni sulla costruzione della Basilica vera e propria e degli stessi musei. Ma più che leggere vi lascio gustare le foto.
Before we got to the museums, we walked through the gardens and stopped to admire all of the fresco representations that are inside the Sistine Chapel. Alessandra informed me on how the St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican museums were built. But, more than reading about it I want you to enjoy my photos.
Entriamo nella Pinacoteca che cosi come la conosciamo è stata inaugurata nel 1932, costruita dall’architetto Luca Beltrami per volere di Pio XI.
It was then time to see the Vatican Pinacoteca (Art Gallery) which, as we know, was inaugurated in 1932, especially constructed by the architect Luca Beltrami for Pius XI.
Usciamo dalla Pinacoteca e ci troviamo nel cortile della pigna che prende il nome dall’enorme pigna che è collocata sul ripiano della scalinata e domina tutto il cortile. Nel 1990 è stata posta anche La Sfera nella Sfera di Pomodoro.
As we exited the Pinacoteca, we ended up at the “Cortile Della Pigna” ( Pine cone courtyard ) which takes its name from the colossal bronze pine cone sculpture situated in a way that dominates the whole courtyard. In 1990, the “Sfera nella Sfera” (Sphere within a Sphere), a modern bronze sculpture created by A. Pomodoro was added in the pine cone courtyard.
Passiamo poi nel cortile ottagonale interno che è il Museo di Pio Clementino.
We also visited the Octagonal Courtyard, the inner court of the Belvedere Palace, which is Pio Clementino museum.
Dopo aver visitato la sala delle muse, la sala rotonda e la sala a croce greca, saliamo ed andiamo nelle zona delle gallerie, la galleria dei Candelabri, la galleria degli Arazzi e la galleria delle Carte Geografiche.
Quello che mi colpisce, oltre alla magnificenza di queste gallerie, è l’odore che c’è, ma può darsi che me lo sia solo immaginato…
After visiting the Hall of the Muses, Round Hall and the Greek Cross Hall, we decided to go see the Gallery of Chandeliers, the Gallery of Tapestries and the Gallery of the Geographical maps. What fascinated me the most, aside from the beauty of the Galleries themselves, was the smell there. Or did I just imagine that?
Prima di arrivare alla Cappella Sistina visitiamo la sala Sobieski e la sala dell’Immacolata, gli appartamenti Borgia e le stanze di Raffaello ( foto 24-25).
Before heading to the Sistine Chapel, we stopped at the Sobieski Room, the Room of the Immaculate Conception, the Borgia Apartments and the Raphael Rooms ( photo 24-25 )
E finalmente entriamo nella Cappella Sistina. Non vi racconterò quello che ho provato, anche perché ognuno vive le proprie emozioni a suo modo, ma sappiate che tutte e dico tutte le persone che erano lì dentro erano tutte e dico tutte con il naso all’insù e con la bocca aperta. Riuscite ad immaginare la scena? Spero di si.
Non riesco a quantificare il tempo che abbiamo passato all’interno della Cappella anche perché sembra un posto senza tempo, anzi mi correggo, è un posto con un tempo suo. Usciamo mentre inizia la Santa Messa. E’ vero come dicevo prima non si possono fare foto all’interno ma vi garantisco che non ho avuto voglia, ero troppo preso ad assorbire tutto quello che vedevo. Scendiamo poi per la Scala Regia.
It was finally time to get lost in the magnificence of the Sistine Chapel. I won’t tell you how I felt, because feelings are very personal. I promise you though: everyone, and I mean everyone who was inside the chapel with us was staring at the ceiling in complete awe. Can you picture that scene in your mind? I really hope so. I can’t quantify the amount of time we spent inside the Sistine Chapel, even because it felt like a timeless place, better yet, it does, indeed, belong to an era of its own. As we finally left the Chapel, the Holy Mass was about to begin. It’s true, taking pictures inside the Sistine Chapel is not allowed, and that’s ok, because it was the last thing on my mind as I was too busy breathing all of its splendor in, one breath at a time. Our day at the Vatican Museums was coming to an end as we approached the Royal Staircase ( Scala Regia ).
